The fitness industry is a funny space at times.
So many myths being bandied around, promoted by celebrities, magazines and TV, what are you meant to believe?
This diet or the next?
This way of training or that?
Low carb, high fat. High carb, low fat. High protein, low carb.
Confusing for many, I can see that.
It gets even more confusing when various trainers in the industry will argue the best way to help someone lose body fat.
“If people in the know don’t even know, how am I meant to know?”
Ever thought that? Maybe you have, maybe not.
Here are the 5 fatal flaws with the industry you need to be aware of.
1. Just because someone is in shape, it doesn’t mean he or she is an expert or qualified to give you real advice.
Instagram is littered with thousands of “models” in amazing shape.
Some give great advice, some give terrible advice and get the unsuspecting to buy their product in the hope that they will look like them.
This goes for the big guy at the gym. “Bro science” is a thing.
I fell victim to this when I was 17 years old.
A big muscular guy told me try these drugs. “No harmful side effects mate, you will grow like a weed”
I was in awe of him.
Turns out he sold me fake drugs, which could have caused even more problems.
He was right. I grew…
…as did my face and my nipples looked like I was lactating. Not a good look.
Thanks a lot mate.
On top of that, I got caught injecting into my butt cheek in the bathroom by my mum and dad.
2. Many “experts” will push their agenda, depending what they are into themselves.
A cross fitter may tell Mrs Jones that she needs to be an Olympic lifter and a gymnast to lose 20lbs.
Mrs Jones believes the expert. She trusts him or her.
Expert says “you need to being doing intermittent fasting, it’s the best way to burn body fat”
It usually means he/she is doing that and it works for them.
3. The industry is designed to make money (all businesses are).
You know this, I know this, we all know this.
There are crooks in the fitness business, just like in any industry but and many people get stung as they just don’t know.
Don’t get me wrong.
There are far more people that are genuinely trying to help you, you just need to find one.
This isn’t a flaw as such but you get what I mean, hopefully.
4. The media often print complete rubbish in order to get your attention.
“Study shows protein gives you cancer”
“New report says potatoes make you fat”
And so on…
We are hardwired to be attracted to headlines. Don’t get sucked in and don’t get your fitness and nutrition advice from tomorrow’s fish and chip wrapper.
5. Science continually discovers new ideas and advancements all the time and so many jump on something like mad and promote it.
Things do change but some things remain the same.
How your body works will never change.
Your physiology is millions of years old. You can’t play with that. How you consume and burn calories is set.
You can’t change that.
How lose and gain weight – it’s programmed. The universe made it that way.
There will be another 10 crazy diets coming out in the next 12 months, all designed to get you where you wanna go.
Ignore them. They are all designed to get you to eat fewer calories 🙂
I’m just making you aware of where we currently are.
So what do you do?
Take advice from someone that has a proven track record.
Do your research.
Take your time.
Due diligence is key.
Don’t rush in.
